RIFF 12 Highlights



1.     Official  Selections
Rincón International Film Festival this year  will be showcasing 91 films and 16 Music Videos   from 19 different countries including 33 World Premieres and   43 Puerto Rican films. 

2.     Filmmakers attending the Festival
Dozens of  Filmmakers confirmed to be attending from Canada, UK, Australia, Haiti, US/Stateside - (NY, LA), and Puerto Rico.

3.     Partnership with HBO
A new partnership with HBO will bring a Puerto Rico Premiere presentation of the hit Sundance 2012 Documentary – “Ethel”. This documentary is about the Kennedy matriarch and widow of Robert F.  Kennedy – Will screen  during :   Documentary Night - Thursday, April 12th, at Casa Islena.

4.     Multi-million dollar hit Australian film / Puerto Rico Premiere
An exciting Puerto Rico Premiere presentation of the multi-million dollar hit Australian film – Will screen during :  Red Dog - Feature Film Night - Wednesday, April 11th, at Villa Cofresi.

5.     Puerto Rico Highlights include:
RIFF 12 proudly presents a total of  43 Puerto Rican films – including 24 World Premieres

a.     Documentaries

·      No Gano documentary - The Puerto Rico Premiere of the controversial documentary No Gano - (which premiered at the acclaimed Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah in January 2012.) - This documentary gives a rare glimpse at an ancient bloodsport which has endured for centuries and since has become illegal in many countries.   This is an unflinching portrait of cockfighting on the island of Puerto Rico.  Will screen during :
            Daytime Films - Friday, April 13th at 4:50 pm at Villa Cofresi.

·      Aguirre  - The World Premiere of the documentary Aguirre -  This historical documentary tells the story of a Company Town called Aguirre located in southern Puerto Rico between Salinas and Guayama. Will screen during:

- Puerto Rico Day Films - Thursday, April 12th, at 10:25am at Villa Cofresi.
·      La Otra Educación - The World Premiere of the documentary La Otra Educación - The class action suit of Rosa Lydia Vélez v The Education Department is the story line that documents the 30 year struggle of families with disabled children in Puerto Rico. Their only demand is the right to an education for their sons and daughters with special needs. – Will screen during  Student Day - Wednesday, April 11th, 4:00 pm at Villa Cofresi.

·      17 -The World Premiere of the documentary 17 - After failing national tests for almost a decade, a school in Maricao is at risk of closing its doors. Can the students change this disastrous course? It all started with 17...   Puerto Rico Short Film Night - Saturday, April 14th at Rincon Beach Resort.

·      Compañeros de Lucha - The World Premiere of the controversial documentary Compañeros de Lucha -  which explores the protest against urban development at Isla Verde Beach.- Will Screen during: Daytime Films - Friday, April 13th at 12pm at Villa Cofresi.

·      Misión Comida Local - The World Premiere of the documentary Misión Comida Local - a film that explores the importation of food into Puerto Rico – Student Day - Wednesday, April 11th, 1:45 pm at Villa Cofresi.

·      Meme - The World Premiere of the documentary Meme - A story about women in Namibia, Africa.-   Will screen during : Student Day - Wednesday, April 11th, 2:15 pm at Villa Cofresi.

·      Semitostado - The Puerto Rican documentary Semitostado - When a plague of beetles descend upon the coffee plantations of Puerto Rico, the local farmers struggle to continue growing. -   Will screen during : Student Day - Wednesday, April 11th, 3:00 pm at Villa Cofresi.

b.     Puerto Rican Shortfilms & Feature Films

Puerto Rican Short Film Night –Saturday  April 14th at Rincon Beach Resort at 6pm will feature 9 Puerto Rican short films, 5 of which are World Premieres.

Puerto Rican Feature Film Luncheon / Awards - Sunday April 15th at Rincon of the Seas at 12pm will feature 2 World Premiere Puerto Rican films -  1 Short film - Frailty - by Angel Soto and 1 Comedy Feature Film - I AM A DIRECTOR by Javier Colon, who returns to RIFF this year after winning Best of the Fest last year with his short film, “Es Mejor Escucharlo”.

• Documental “No Gano “-Estreno en Puerto Rico del controvertido documental No Gano - (se estrenó en el Festival de Cine de Slamdance aclamado en Park City, Utah en enero de 2012.) - Este documental ofrece una mirada poco común de una sangrienta y antigua tradición  que ha perdurado por siglos y la cual se ha convertido en ilegal en muchos otros países. Es un retrato de las peleas de gallos en Puerto Rico. Se proyectará en:

Aguirre - El estreno mundial del documental Aguirre - Este documental histórico narra la historia de una “ciudad industrial” (Company Town) llamado Aguirre, ubicado en el sur de Puerto Rico entre Salinas y Guayama. Se proyectará en:

La Otra Educación - El estreno mundial del documental La Otra Educación - La demanda de clase de Rosa Lydia Vélez vs El Departamento de Educación es la historia que documenta la lucha de 30 años de familias con niños discapacitados en Puerto Rico. Su única exigencia es el derecho a una educación para sus hijos e hijas con necesidades especiales. - Se proyectará durante la

b. Cortometrajes & Largometrajes de Puerto Rico y Películas

La noche de Cortometrajes de Puerto Rico será el sábado 14 de abril en Rincón Beach Resort desde las 6:00 PM.Contará con 9 cortometrajes puertorriqueños, cinco de los cuales son estrenos mundiales.

Largometraje de Puerto Rico & Almuerzo / Entrega de Premios - Domingo 15 de abril en Rincón of the Seas a las 12 del medio dia. Contará con la presentación de 2 estrenos Mundiales 2 de cine puertorriqueño - 1 cortometraje - Frailty - por Angel Soto y una función de Pelicula de Comedia –“ I’m a Director”por Colón Javier, que vuelve a RIFF este año después de ganar el Premio “Lo Mejor del Festival” el año pasado con su cortometraje, "Es Mejor Escucharlo".

Rincon International Film Festival 2012



The Rincon International Film Festival is proud to present its fifth annual event in beautiful Rincón, Puerto Rico, from April 10th to 15th, 2012.
The popular and acclaimed festival is pleased to announce its 2012 schedule. The films have been chosen from over 700 submissions from around the world. The final lineup includes over 91 films from 19 different countries, 43 Puerto Rican Films and 33 World Premieres. 
Filmmakers from afar have already begun making their travel arrangements and more than half of the films will have filmmakers present at their screenings.

A new partnership with HBO will bring a Puerto Rico Premiere presentation of the hit Sundance 2012 Documentary – “Ethel”. This documentary is about the Kennedy matriarch and widow of Robert F. Kennedy – Will screen during : Documentary Night - Thursday, April 12th, at Casa Islena.

The evening dinner events will be hosted by different resorts in Rincon and are themed with an Opening Comedy Night, Fright Night, Documentary Night and Family Film night. The organizers intend to give away $4000 in cash prizes to filmmakers as well as a scholarship to a young Puerto Rican filmmaker and door prize raffle giveaways to attending audience members. The 2011 Rincon International Film Festival

The Rincón International Film Festival, April 12-16, 2011, will hold its annual festival in various venues in Rincón, Puerto Rico. Rincon is known as the Surfing Capital of the Caribbean, and has attracted a creative community of painters, musicians and film makers to bring together The Rincon Film Festival, now in its 4th year.
The festival presents the best of independent and international films, short and feature films, in various genres including surfing, horror, romantic comedies, dramas, documentaries, animations and music videos.
This year The New York Film Academy, one of the sponsors, will also give a scholarship award to an up and coming Puerto Rican director.
The series of Puerto Rican films include '100,000', by Juan Agustin Marquez, a documentary about the dog overpopulation problem in Puerto Rico.
